The skatepark will reopened at 4:30pm 18 Nov 2005
The contractors have done a lot of sanding of the rough surface and redone some areas of the park following the users comments, so while it certainly not perfect, it is a lot smoother than it was and some of the worst bumps and lumps have gone.
Next steps: The council are keeping back a sum (maybe 10-20% of the £80k) and agreed with the contactor and the engineer that they will return in 6 months to repair the cracks which they expect to appear as the surface settles with the cold and then warmer weather.
Over the 6 months the users will make a note of the sections of the park which need to be cut out and replaced and inform the council and Koan -we know of two places but there may be a few more. I said that I volunteered to collate feedback. 10 large abrasion blocks will be left with Brixton Cycles for the users to do some more DIY smoothing on any key sections landings etc if we think it necessary.
A couple of metal signs will be put on the wall in the next few weeks once they have been received and reviewed by the council.
Official Opening - I told the council that there is an annual jam in the summer when the weather is more reliable so it might make sense to wait until next year, at least then the final repairs will have also been completed. I think the council want to donate some prizes too.
Dave
Many thanks to Jeremy and Dave for their huge efforts over the years for getting this sorted - keep on trucking fellas!
September 2005
Lambeth have stepped up and Stockwell is going to get resurfaced next month! The big thanks go to Laura McBride for raising the extra money to upgrade us from just crack repair to full-blown resurface!
The cracks will all be cut out completely and proper engineered joints put it. The whole park will then be resurfaced in an epoxy concrete screed.
NO CRACKS - SMOOTH - FAST - LOVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The park will be closed for 3 weeks whilst they do the work and I ask you all and to tell all - DON"T POACH THE PARK AFTER THEY LAY THE 'CRETE - it needs to cure properly; the last resurface had holes from bike tracks in it, a big dinge in a bank from a skater landing and some fool wrote "CATES" on the edge of the bowl. Rant over, go back to celebrating.
Lambeth are holding a public info session next Thurdsay in the office next to Brixton Cycles - I'll let you know the time when I get it.

Sept 2004:
There have now allocated 50k exactly to the skatepark. The caveats on this money include that the skatepark be repaired to 'health and safety' acceptable standards and that this be signed off (for a fee) by a council approved professional.
Any money we raise now should go towards designated improvements.
The council want to write the brief for this work immediately and move on tendering as the funds need to be spent by April '05.
The current position indicates a resurfacing of the original park (min. 40k) providing the substructure is deemed to be sound by an engineer (min. 5k). This leaves only small change for new stuff. Therefore, ANY FUNDING WOULD BE MOST WELCOME!
If the substructure is deemd unsound for resurfacing we will need to work out a new strategy. Finger crossed.
1000 Suporters
